I bought the Samsung ML-2851ND printer this weekend from Office Depot. They had it on sale for $199.99 plus tax and then a $20 MIR. It is replacing my ancient Samsung ML-1210 printer, which is still working fine but can’t duplex and has no ethernet built-in.
The Samsung ML-2851ND printer does duplex printing and has built-in 10/100 network ability. So far I have not tried printing from another machine on the network. Sad, since it’s one of the main reasons I bought it!
One thing I’m kinda unhappy about is that this printer is wider than the previous one I had. It occupies more space on my table and barely fits next to my scanner. And if my scanner sits on the left of the printer, the power switch for the printer is blocked.
Print quality seems excellent at 1200 dpi and the printer runs quickly and on the quiet side. After a print comes out, which doesn’t make much noise, it goes back to being silent. Some printers (like the Samsung ML-1210) have their fans run for a while to cool down creating noise. Recent models, like Samsung ML-2851ND, seem to avoid this somehow.
If you are in the market for a new printer, this one is worth a look. Make sure to have an available ethernet jack to connect it to your network.
See my YouTube Video of this printer here:
Note: In the video, the window screen that wasn’t showing up too clearly is the one below. These are the settings under printing preferences which print on both sides of the page (duplex) so that the print is right-side-up.
